Obituary

Berwyn A. Fred, age 94, a resident of Wheaton, died peacefully surrounded by his three children, Wednesday, June 30, 2021, at Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield, Illinois.  He was born April 27, 1927 in Mishawaka, Indiana to Roy & Nellie Fred.  After graduating from Mishawaka HS at age 18, he was drafted and assigned I Co. 3rd Bn. 310th Regiment, 78th Infantry Division - Germany.  Upon discharge, Berwyn returned to South Bend, IN where he attended Indiana University - SB and joined Studebaker Corp.  It is at Studebaker where he met his bride of 54 years, Louise Marie Siddall. The newlyweds transferred to New Brunswick, NJ where he attended law school at nights in New York and was admitted to practice before the ICC.

It was in the mid Fifties when Berwyn decided on Wheaton to raise his family, accepting an opportunity with Amsted Ind. in Chicago. He spent the next 35 years helping build two industry-leading subsidiaries, Griffin Wheel Co, and Griffin Pipe Products, eventually retiring as Director, Administrative Services.

A closet cowboy, Berwyn longed to retire in the Southwest, but when it came time, roots were too deep from the years of service and friendships built at Gary Memorial United Methodist Church, Kiwanis Club of Wheaton, and more.  For the last 13 years, Berwyn was an active Wyndemere homeowner and friend.

A proud veteran and historian of WWII, Berwyn invested 20+ years researching his experiences while stationed in Europe and the Berlin District to write a novel, Westerwald - The Beginning and the End.

He is survived by his three children, Brad Fred of Coppell, TX, Amy (Jeff Wiggins) Killian of Maybank, TX, and Nancy (Steve) Zuckerman of Wheaton; six grandchildren, Erin & Ally Killian, Alexa (Jared) Moore, and Kelsey Fred, Matthew and Jonathan Zuckerman.; one great grandson, Cooper Killian. He was preceded in death by his wife, Louise, his son in law, Steve Killian, along with several other cherished loved ones. Services will be private.

Memorial gifts may be directed to Gary United Methodist Church, 224 N. Main St., Wheaton, IL 60187.
