August 5, 1938 – July 16, 2019
Torrey M. Johnson, Jr., 80, of Deerfield Beach, Florida passed away on Tuesday, July 16 th at his residence in Mt. Bethel, PA.
Torrey was born in Evanston, Illinois on August 5 th , 1938. He was the son of the late Torrey M. Johnson, Sr. and Evelyn (Nilsen) Johnson.
He was the dear husband of Susan (Soderberg) Johnson. They celebrated their 56 th wedding anniversary in March.
Torrey was raised in Chicago and Wheaton Illinois and graduated from Wheaton College. He then completed U.S Naval Officer Candidate School in Rhode Island and served as an officer in the US Navy (Lieutenant) from 1962 to 1966. He was stationed in Long Beach, California and served on the mine sweeper, USS Persistent. He served in the Naval reserves from 1966 to 1979. He was also a Sales Manager for Power Equipment Company in Elmhurst, Illinois from 1966 to 1972. In 1973, he moved, with his family, to Florida, from Glen Ellyn, Illinois to begin his career with the Florida State Park Service. He began as a Park Ranger in Collier Seminole State Park and concluded his career as a District Manager (Major) in Gainesville, Florida.
In addition to his wife, Susan, Torrey is survived by a daughter, Kimberly Sue Cameron, wife of Bruce (Mt. Bethel, PA), his sister, Arleen Yoder, wife of Keith, and 3 grandchildren; Matthew Cameron (Brooklyn, NY), Torrey D. Cameron and his wife Ellie (Wheaton, IL), and Anna Sue Cameron (Mt. Bethel, PA). He was preceded in death by his son, Torrey Eric Johnson, and his sister, Ruth Johnson.
Torrey's impact on those he loved will always be felt. He was a man marked by integrity, service, and honor. He was a loyal friend and respected leader. He adored his wife, Sue, his daughter, Kim, and was deeply committed to the lives of his 3 grandchildren. He, of course, missed his son greatly since his death in 2007. He loved Florida, the State Parks of Florida, and what he called the 'real Florida'. As a former Naval Officer, he loved and respected the sea, and anything to do with water, including boating and fishing. As a huge fan of the Florida Gators, he was always cheering on the 'orange and blue'. He enjoyed working in his yard and planting beautiful flower gardens.
Above all else, he was a follower of Jesus Christ. He knew God had rescued him, and that God would be faithful to what He had promised. His greatest desire was that those he loved would know the truth of God's love and mercy.
