Obituary

Terry Alan Higgins, 75, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, December 28, 2023. He was born May 27, 1948, in Evanston, Illinois to Mildred and Lyman Higgins.

Terry grew up in Deerfield, Illinois, graduating from Deerfield High School in 1966. He attended Southern Illinois University, graduating with degrees in Religious Studies and Mathematics.

Terry was a beloved husband to Laurie to whom he was married for fifty years; father to Jenaeth Markaj, Easten (Micah) Niphakis, John (Jillian) Higgins, and Emma (Robert) Morris; grandfather to Marin, Jude, Briasson, Corin, Ella, Connor, Everett, Lola Bea, Welles, Lucy, and Isla; and brother to Yvonne and Joyce.

Terry was preceded in death by his sister Marilyn.

Forty years ago, Terry accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior. Jesus was the foundation upon which Terry built his life. Nothing gave him greater joy than knowing his children are Christ-followers, and his fervent prayer was that all of his grandchildren would be as well. Terry looked forward to spending eternity with his cherished family and friends.

Few of life's worldly pleasures surpassed music in Terry's life. He loved all genres but especially blues.

From 1975 - 1981, he owned and operated a used book and record store called haffa's (not capitalized, short "a") in Athens, Ohio. While in Athens, Terry took his CPA exam and in 1982 was hired by Arthur Andersen to work in the Tax Division of the Dallas, Texas office. He transferred to the Chicago office in 1983. Later, he worked for Ernst & Young.

Twenty years ago, Terry ventured out on his own and started what became and remained the most rewarding two decades of his professional career: Higgins Tax & Financial Services. So rewarding was his tax practice and so meaningful were his relationships with his clients that retiring due to Parkinson's disease and cancer was difficult. After much careful consideration, he sold his tax practice to a former colleague whom Terry knew would care for his clients in the same way Terry did.
