Stanley Rogers Yohe's Obituary

Stanley Rogers Yohe, 86, a 10-year resident of Carol Stream, prior to that a lifelong resident of Glen Ellyn, died peacefully on October 2, 2017, at the Johnson Health Care Center at Windsor Park, Carol Stream, Illinois. Born to Charles & Norma (Rogers) Yohe in Oak Park, Stan grew up in Glen Ellyn and raised his family there with his wife of almost 60 years, Melodee.

Stan graduated from Glenbard Township High School in 1948 and Wheaton College in 1952. He served for two years in the US Army at the end of the Korean War, as a clerk typist and then as a chaplain's assistant in Tokyo. He earned a master's degree from the National University of Mexico before returning to Glen Ellyn in 1956. He spent the next 32 years teaching history at Glenbard West, also serving as Social Studies department chair and Student Council sponsor before retiring in 1989. Stan enjoyed nature and the outdoors, and has passed on his love of travel and appreciation for other cultures to his family.

Guided by his deep Christian faith, Stan lived and served others with quiet integrity and strength. A lifelong member and active participant at Glen Ellyn Bible Church, Stan taught and served as an elder and on the missions committee for many years. Stan and Melodee have both been active supporters and have spent time volunteering at El Camino Academy, a Christian K-12 school in Bogota, Colombia, where Stan served as director from 1989-91, and their daughter Beth has been director for the past 25 years.

Stan lived a good, full, abundant life, and his family is honored and proud to be a part of his earthly legacy. Stan is survived by his wife, Melodee Arterburn Yohe; their 3 children, Beth (Rafael) Afanador, Linda (Carlos) Vergara, and Kent (Karin) Yohe; 7 grandchildren: Rodrigo Afanador, and Viviana Afanador (Lucas) Spicer, Sara Vergara (Andrew) Freer, Andrew Vergara, Erik (Kyle) Yohe, Kyle Yohe, Megan Yohe; and 4 great-grandchildren: Ada & Miriam Freer, Tatiana Spicer, and George Yohe; and a brother, Don (Deb) Yohe.

He will be remembered as a man of gentle, calm demeanor, humility, and deep strength of character. His quick and perceptive mind was full of wisdom, knowledge, and endless history and geography facts that he loved to share with his family and thousands of high school students. His commitment to his wife and family is inspiring and has been a beautiful example of love. Stan had a servant's heart and a steady, unwavering faith in God that inspired many.
