Obituary

James Pierce O'Brien, age 70, passed away on July 17, 2020 after a valiant battle with Alzheimer's Disease.  He is survived by his wife of 41 years, Mary Ann O'Brien and was the loving dad of Joe (Amy) O'Brien, Colleen (Brandon) Blackshear, and Jim O'Brien.  He was adored by his 4 grandchildren, Jack (5), Harrison (2), Dominic (3) and Aidan (1), and dear sisters Annie (deceased) and Barbara. He was also blessed by the support and love of many sweet friends and neighbors during his life journey.

He was born April 6, 1950 in Chicago IL to parents Margaret and Pierce O'Brien.  Jim grew up in the Austin neighborhood of Chicago and was known to play at La Follette park at the end of his block.  He was a lover of nature, animals and sports at an early age and appreciated these into his later years.

In school Jim excelled in Track and Field as well as academics, going on to major in Biology at St. Mary's College in Winona, Minnesota.  He then completed medical school and residency in internal medicine at The University of Illinois in Chicago.

He met Mary Ann Principali during his internship and the pair married on March 31, 1979 in Joliet, Illinois.  The newlyweds moved to Boston for Jim's fellowship in Infectious Diseases.  Thereafter the couple moved to Wheaton, Illinois, and Jim worked at Alexian Brothers Hospital for his entire 30 year career.  He was known for his early rounds, always taking the stairs, and his dedication to his patients.

Jim was an avid reader and had a unique passion for artifacts, many of which he collected with his metal detector.  His rock collection was esteemed as were his coins and stamps. His father worked for the railroad, hence his fondness for travel by track.  His family enjoyed trips westward, exploring Mount Rushmore, Yellowstone, The Grand Tetons and more.  He loved to ski despite breaking his leg on the mountains in high school.

He will be remembered for his tranquil and humble personality, as well as his staunch devotion to his children.  His patience allowed others to shine, and he remained graceful in his battle with Alzheimer's Disease.
