Hon. Lewis V. Morgan, Jr., age 88, a lifelong resident of Wheaton, IL, passed away peacefully on Thursday, October 4, 2018. He was born December 17, 1929 in Elmhurst to Lewis and Meta Morgan, the youngest of four children.
Lew grew up in Wheaton and graduated from Wheaton High School in 1947. He went on to DePauw University in Indiana where he earned a B.A. in 1951 and then went on to the University of Chicago where he earned a J.D. He served with the U.S. Army in Germany from 1954 until 1956. From 1958 until 1961 he was an Assistant State's Attorney in DuPage County. He left the State's Attorney's office in 1962 to run for the Illinois House of Representatives. Successful in his first election contest, he was re-elected in 1964, 1966, and in 1968, serving as House Majority Leader in his last term. Throughout these years he maintained a law practice in Wheaton and was a member of the DuPage Bar Association for over 60 years.
Judge Morgan was appointed Associate Judge in 1975 and retired a full Circuit Judge in 1986. He served on the board of directors of the IL Chapter of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers and served as head of Domestic Relations for DuPage County.
As a lifelong resident of Wheaton, his father and grandfather both served as DuPage County Superintendent of Schools for a total of 64 years. He was a member of many boards including, Wheaton Library, the Wheaton Art League, and was named one of "Wheaton's Legends" by the Historical society. He was instrumental in bringing Fermilab to Illinois as a member of the Atomic Energy Commission of IL. He was active in local Republican politics. When Senator Margaret Chase Smith of Maine ran for the Republican nomination for President in 1964, Lew was her IL Campaign Manager and they enjoyed a close friendship.
He authored "They Came to Sing", a biographical collection of the Elmhurst Mannerchor, of which he was a proud member. Lew enjoyed traveling, golfing, sailing, movies and dogs. He enjoyed music and was known as "the singing legislator". He was a member of the Gary United Methodist Church where he sang in the choir for over 60 years.
He is survived by his wife, Linda Morgan, four children, Rev. Barbara (Robert) Oshlo of Omaha, NE, Lewis V. "Skip" Morgan III of Joliet, Diane (Dr. Kevin) Regan of Wheaton, and Laura (Aaron Blane) Morgan of Palatine, 6 grandchildren, Christine, Ryan, Christopher, Kaitlin, Emily, and Rowan, 13 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters, Meta "Jerry" Irving and Harriet Graham, and infant sister, Laura Ruth.
A visitation will be held on Sunday, October 7, 2018 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Hultgren Funeral Home, 304 N. Main St., Wheaton. A funeral service will be held on Monday, October 8, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. at Gary United Methodist Church. Interment will follow at Wheaton Cemetery in Wheaton, Illinois.
