Joyce Van
Vleet
May 18, 1935 – August 27, 2022
Elizabeth "Joyce" Van Vleet, age 87, a resident of Carol Stream, IL, died August 27, 2022, at Windsor Park, in Carol Stream, Illinois. She was born May 18, 1935 in Sidney Center, NY.
Joyce's parents were Rev. Charles Daniel Hull and Amanda Emma Hull (Yoho). Joyce shared in many travels & adventures including a train ride as a child from NY to Alaska where her family (mom, dad, older brother Phil and older sister Mary) had a radio broadcast ministry in Ketchikan, AK. Before WWII began.
On June 12, 1954, Joyce married Dave in Richford, NY where they also started their family in the Lodi area. After Dave joined General Electric, the family was frequently transferred to cities across the USA. During that time, Joyce took care of their five children, as well as to her mother. They ended up being based in Phoenix 4 years. In 1971, Dave found a new job in Chicago, so they lived in Wheaton, IL for 14 years. Joyce used her secretarial skills at Wheaton Bible Church and Wheaton Christian Grammar School.
One of her passions was singing in church choirs in VA, AZ and IL. Once Dave and Joyce became empty-nesters, they returned to Phoenix, re-joining Scottsdale Bible Church.
Joyce faced many challenges & joys during her life, including raising 5 kids (her most prized achievement), as well as physical challenges such as surviving a near-fatal bout of whooping cough as an infant and being diagnosed with MS later in life. For the most part, the MS went into remission, so she & Dave enjoyed many happy years together.
Joyce enjoyed telling stories about her younger years, such as ice skating on ponds & streams in NY, trips w/her preacher dad doing home visits and Alaska wildlife experiences. She excelled in word-related games and puzzles (to the chagrin of David, especially in Scrabble!). She enjoyed watching almost every sport. Joyce most relished the visits from the family that surrounded her during her years as a widow, especially those in the Windsor Park area that included 3 very precious, active great-grandchildren.
She is survived by her five children, Diana (Dan) Pearson, Thomas Van Vleet, Barbara (Vernon Marsh) Van Vleet, Paul (Hilde) Van Vleet and Peter Van Vleet; grandchildren, Susan Joyce (Matthew) Anderson, Steven J Pearson, Anastasia (Peter) Conolly, Adrienne (Connor) Hobbs, Benjamin Van Vleet, Abigail Van Vleet, Tyler (Sydney Tafoya) and Scott Van Vleet; and three great grandchildren, Adriana, Luke and Kaylee.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 58 years, David L. Van Vleet and granddaughter Laura J Pearson.
Services will be held privately near her birthplace in upstate New York.
Memorial gifts may be directed to The Windsor Park Benevolent Fund, 124 Windsor Park Drive, Carol Stream, IL 60188
