Barbara Scott Huszagh's Obituary

Barbara Scott Huszagh went to her loving Maker on Sept. 7, 2017. She was born May 16, 1930 to Arthur P. and Katherine Otis Scott, and is pre-deceased by her elder sister Eleanor. She is survived by her former husband, R. Lee, by 4 children Andrew McClurg (Janet H.), Virginia Huszagh (Eric Bean), Richard Huszagh (Christine D.) and Catherine Scott-Sills (Neil), as well 4 grandchildren and 2 step-grandchildren.

She attended the Univ. of Chicago Lab School and later graduated from the University with her BA. At the age of 17, she traveled with her family to Peking for a year; her father taught at Yenching University (now Peking University) while Barbara taught at the Peking-American school. This fostered her life-long love of education. Returning to Chicago, she married David McClurg and had her son Andrew, and divorced. She spent the next two years in Japan with her sister, and taught English to Japanese students. She returned to Illinois and married R. Lee Huszagh, and had three more children. She raised her family with love, fun, a steady hand, and a constant commitment to doing what was right in this world.

After her children were grown, she returned to college to get her Masters of Social Work from George Williams College, but eventually returned to her first love of teaching. She taught English as a Second Language for 30 years at the College of DuPage, and an additional 2 years at World Relief; this kept her active until her mid 80's when cancer interrupted her busy life. She was loved and respected by her students and fellow faculty, and inspired them with her own love and respect for them, as well as a steady focus on helping people achieve their goals in life. She was both a visionary and practical, and was able to achieve results that improved the world around her.

Barbara was sustained by a deep faith, and was a long-time and active member and elder of the First Presbyterian Church in Wheaton, Ill. Music was one of her great loves in life, just ahead of her love of reading. And, of course, Michillinda, Michigan, where her family has had a summer cottage since the 1890s, was a special place for her, made all the richer by so many wonderful summers with family and friends. Over the years, she spent many hours volunteering for PTA, Wheaton Drama Club, the YMCA, in various roles at her church (including JUST Correspondence Bible and literacy outreach at the county jail, Circle chairperson, food pantry, and Abraham's circle), and also went into Chicago weekly for many years to play guitar and sings songs with inner city students. She was a tireless advocate for immigrants and against injustice in any form. Her gentleness and loving spirit were coupled with a fearless ability to speak the truth as she saw it. She touched innumerable lives as a friend, co-worker, mother, surrogate mother, advocate, teacher, singer, cheerleader, empathetic listener, practical adviser, and humble servant. She gave without conditions, and showed us how love can be a gift and not a chain. She will be greatly missed.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 16th at 11:00 am at the First Presbyterian Church in Wheaton, IL.

Memorials may be directed to Habitat for Humanity or the First Presbyterian Church of Wheaton .
