Viorel Doru Laurentiu, age 63, a resident of Glendale Heights, died suddenly of a massive heart attack on Saturday, September 25. He was born on December 4, 1946 in Romania.
He grew up in Brad, Romania and moved to Timisoara where he completed his high school and college studies in electrical engineering. He married Doris in 1971 at the First Baptist Church in Timisoara, where they were members. Together with their three children, they traveled extensively on long vacations to the mountains and seaside.
In Romania Doru was an involved member of the underground evangelical movement during the communist regime. His home was open to many U.S. missionaries who came to Romania to encourage the Christian believers in those oppressive times. His tireless efforts helped his family finally receive immigration papers and come to the United States where they settled in the Wheaton area in 1987.
He has worked for Goding Electric, Slavic Gospel Association, Knowles Electronics, Motorola and recently at Plymouth Place Retirement Community in LaGrange Park, where he was greatly loved and appreciated by many of the residents. He is a member of First Baptist Church of Wheaton and also worked as a volunteer at Romanian Missionary Society. He was close to the Romanian Christian Community in the Chicago area, served as a leader in several local churches and conducted Bible studies for many years.
Doru enjoyed playing soccer, and did so with students and friends from Wheaton College for many years. Other hobbies were taking trips, hiking outdoors and gardening. A special joy was spending time with his beloved granddaughter, Eliza.
He is survived by his wife Doris, three children, Laura (Vincent) Cook of River Forest, Luciano Laurentiu of Chicago, and Radu Paul (Brittney) Laurentiu of Wheaton, one granddaughter, Eliza Cook, two brothers in Romania, Adrian (Anca) and Daniel (Eva) Laurentiu, and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ioan and Elena Laurentiu.
A visitation will be on Tuesday, September 28 from 5 to 9 p.m. at Hultgren Funeral Home, 304 N. Main St. in Wheaton. A funeral service will be held on Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church, 1310 N. Main St. in Wheaton.
