Ernest Harold Guldbeck, 87, a former resident of Glen Ellyn, died Wednesday December 10th at home in Bowling Green Manor in Ohio. He was born on May 5th to Ernest and Sigrid Guldbeck in Chicago.
Ernest was a graduate of Glenbard West High School and attended Western Illinois University, the American Academy of Art, and The Art Institute of Chicago. Largely self-taught, Mr. Guldbeck was a prolific artist, illustrator and craftsman. During active military service in the Coast Guard and Navy during WWII, he performed underwater demolition. They settled in Glen Ellyn and he built his own home with extraordinary detail to woodworking. He worked for several commercial art studios, (Buchan Advertising, Martin-Trlak, and UGV&N) as both artist and art director. One of his favorite assignments was creating artwork for the Keebler Company and illustrating the Ernie Keebler elf that coincidentally bore his name. Ernie wrote and illustrated several children's books and pursued wildlife painting that reflected the great respect and love he held for the outdoors. He also had a great passion for music and enjoyed playing banjo, guitar and mandolin with several local bluegrass groups.
Following the death of his first wife, he married Eunice Dawn Livingston. He is survived by three children, Karin Lyle of Waynesville, NC, Mille Guldbeck of Bowling Green, OH and Per Guldbeck of Ft. Wayne, IN; two step-children, Tim and Charles Livingston; five grandchildren, Ashley Gibson, Amanda Jacoby, Cassandra, Christen and Alex; and two great-grandchildren, Grayson Gibson and Hadley Jacoby.
