Obituary

Charles Franklin Long, age 70, a resident of Wheaton, died Monday, April 14 at the Central Du Page Hospital. He was born on January 19, 1938 in Norman, Oklahoma.

Charlie grew up in Norman, Oklahoma where he graduated from Norman High School in 1956. He graduated from the University of Oklahoma in 1960. On September 16, 1961 he married Joan Hampton in Ponca City, OK. They lived in Norman, where he worked for the Norman Transcript and the University of OK. In 1967 they moved to Wheaton, IL, where he worked for over 10 years for the Society of Professional Journalists as the editor of the Quill magazine. He retired from Tellabs Inc. of Lisle in 2000.

He has been an active member of Gary United Methodist Church in Wheaton and recently has been involved in the restoration of the Wheaton Theater. His passion was to coach and support his sons and their families. He was very outgoing and loved people.

He served on the board of directors for the Western Du Page Special Recreation Association where he was honored for his years of service with the Hall of Fame award. He also served on the City of Wheaton Arts Commission and on the board of Outreach Community Ministries.

He is survived by his wife Joan, three sons, Chuck (Lisa) of San Diego, CA, David (Tya) of Phoenix, AZ and Andy of Wheaton, five grandchildren, Lindsay, Samantha, Nathan, Zachary, and Katherine Madison Long, one brother, Thomas Long of Norman, OK.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, James.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, April 20 from 2 until 7 p.m. at the Hultgren Funeral Home, 304 N. Main St. in Wheaton. A memorial service will be held on Monday at 11 a.m. at Gary United Methodist Church, 224 N. Main St. Wheaton, IL 60187. Interment will be in Norman, Oklahoma.
