Dr. William C. Herbert, age 85, a resident of Belmont Village in Carol Stream and a former resident of St. Louis, Missouri, died Tuesday, October 30 at home. He was born on August 13, 1922 in St. Louis to Byron and Ethel Herbert.
During WWII he served in the US Army and fought in the Battle of the Bulge and became a POW in Germany. He was a graduate of John Burroughs School and Washington University in St. Louis and received a Ph.D. in Journalism from the University of Missouri. Dr. Herbert taught journalism at various colleges and was a longtime sports writer.
He is survived by his nephews William C. Herbert II of St. Louis, John S. Herbert of Brooklyn, NY, and Edward R. Herbert of Wheaton as well as other nieces and nephews.
He was preceded by his brother, Byron C. Herbert Jr., his sister, Shirley Keller and his parents.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, November 3, at 7:00 P.M. at College Church in Wheaton, 332 E. Seminary Ave. in Wheaton, friends may visit with the family from 6 to 7 p.m. Interment will be held privately at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery.
