Beatrice C. Nieuwenhuyse, age 90, a resident of Wheaton and formerly a longtime resident of Winnetka, died Wednesday, October 19, 2011, at Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield, Illinois. She was born March 16, 1921 in Minneapolis, Minnesota to Frederick and Ragnhild Congdon.
Betty graduated from the University of Mississippi, where she was the first northerner to be named "Miss Ole Miss." During this time she toured as a soloist with several big bands. In 1944 she met and married Jacob Nieuwenhuyse, who was a major in the Army. They settled in Winnetka where they raised their family. She was an active member of the Winnetka Congregational Church. She enjoyed traveling and spending time with her family.
She is survived by two sons, Fritz (Elizabeth) Newenhuyse of Winfield and Craig Newhouse of Sacramento, CA, three grandchildren, Amanda (Stuart) Zeigler, and Trevor and Alex Newhouse.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jacob, her parents and one brother, Frederick Congdon.
A visitation will be held on Monday, October 24, 2011 from 6 to 7 p.m. at Hultgren Funeral Home, 304 N. Main St. in Wheaton, where a funeral service will follow at 7:00 p.m. Interment will be held on Tuesday, October 25 at 11:30 a.m. at Sunset Ridge Memorial Park in Kenosha, Wisconsin.
