Wilfried L. Schmerold, M.D., age 91, a longtime resident of Wheaton, died Friday, April 15 at St. Patrick's Residence in Naperville. He was born on December 30, 1919 in Germany.
He was a graduate of Ludwig-Maximilians-Universitaet Munchen, Fachbereich Medizin, MUNCHEN, Germany. He practiced dermatology in the Wheaton area for 50 years. Dr. Schmerold was a co-founder of Central DuPage Hospital (CDH). He continued his work and research until age 89.
He loved his work and he had a passion for travel, stopping on all seven continents, including Antarctica.
He is survived by his children, Klaus (Gabi), John (Amy), Wilfred (Suzanne), James (Lisa), Sue (Ed) Zielke, Paul (Amy), Carl (Shelly), Mike (Erin), and Tom; nineteen grandchildren, Diana, Sebastian, Kerstin, Katrina, Elizabeth, Jack, Luke, Brian, Tyler, Emily, Aaron, Alex, Andy, Melissa, Alicia, Peter, Jacob, Emma, and Ryan; and one great-granddaughter, Kylie. He is also survived by his former wife Gerda.
He was preceded in death by two daughters, Janet and Mary Ann, his former wife, Perlette, his parents, Wilhelm and Frieda and his sister Marianne.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday, April 19 from 4-9 P.M. at Hultgren Funeral Home, 304 N. Main St. in Wheaton. A Mass will be held Wednesday, April 20 at 10:00 A.M. at St. Michael Church, 310 S. Wheaton Ave., Wheaton, IL. Interment will follow at St. Michael Cemetery in Wheaton.
