Obituary

Wendell L. Meyer, age 74, a resident of Glen Ellyn, IL, died on Wednesday, December 13, 2023.  He was born April 3, 1949 in Kankakee, IL to Robert & Helen Meyer.

Wendell was raised in the small, central Illinois town of Union Hill. It was there that he helped his aunts and uncles with farming and cultivated his love of nature, plants, birds and the outdoors. He graduated from Illinois State University and "walked the pavement" to find his first job in Information Technology at Continental Bank in Chicago, IL.  He subsequently went on to DePaul University graduating with an MBA in Finance. He held jobs at Discover Card, Household Finance (Salinas, CA), Northern Trust and his final job was with the American Medical Association.

Anyone that knew Wendell knew that he loved to talk about finances, birds, plants and his daughters and recently, his son-in-law, Josh. He loved the days when he could be outside from morning until dusk working in the yard, either at his home or at Lake Thunderbird. He loved his neighborhood in Glen Ellyn and wonderful neighbors and looked forward to sitting out in the yard having a Gin & Tonic with the Exmoor Gang after a long day working in the yard.

Wendell was dedicated to his parents, siblings, nieces and nephews and very thankful for each one. He looked forward every Sunday to his call from his brother, Wayne, from Japan. He considered his nephew, Paul Meyer, the closest thing he had to a son and loved the visits from Paul and Sarah and watching his great nephews, Teddy and Sammy grow. Despite his jokes about the "outlaws" he loved his extended Cunningham family, and was so fortunate to have been able to be at the last Cunningham Reunion in October of this year.

His love for Christ grew as he became involved with the Navigators in college and made many lifelong friends. With the family's move to Glen Ellyn, IL, Parkview Community Church soon became their church home. Wendell was an Elder at Parkview and loved being able to work with that board in his quiet and humble way. Parkview also became the starting place for many life-giving friendships that he cherished up until his very last days.

He was diagnosed with ALS in 2016 and has fought a long, hard, battle for 7 years with his wife, Theresa, always at his side. He was dedicated to helping others with ALS by raising money at the Les Turner Foundation Annual Walk for Life. The care from the Les Turner staff and Lightway's Hospice has been invaluable. Lastly, his caregivers (Julie, JT, Ilona and Sheila) made his life better every day and allowed him to live comfortably as long as he did.

He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Theresa; his children Elizabeth (Joshua) Koo, Ellen Meyer, and Emily Meyer; his siblings Wayne (Miyako) Meyer of Tsukuba, Japan and Lauren (Denise) Meyer of McHenry, IL; his brothers & sisters-in-law JoEllen (Joe) Monahan of Arcola, IL, Bill (Norine) Cunningham of Grand Rapids, MI, Michael (Deanna) Cunningham of Chicago, IL, Susan (Phil) Slagle of Itasca, IL, Jacqueline Cunningham of Sparta, MI, Jeff (Cathy) Cunningham of Urbana, IL, and Dan (Soraida) Cunningham of Grand Rapids, MI. He is also survived by many nieces & nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his father & mother-in-law, Jack and Betty Cunningham, his sister Ann Meyer, and his brother-in-law, John Cunningham.
