Walton Ellis Mangum, age 68, a long-time resident of San Francisco, California, died March 9, 2011 of natural causes at his home. He was born May 30, 1942 in Meridian, Mississippi. He was the first child of three and first son of Wallace T. Mangum and Elizabeth Irene King Mangum. Both of his parents and his sister, Charlotte Dianne Mangum Godwin preceded him in death. Walton was never married and had no children. After graduating from Millsaps College in Jackson, Mississippi, Walton moved to San Francisco where he was employed by the University of California until he retired in 2007. Walton spoke several languages fluently and had passionate interest in researching and preserving the history of his family ancestry and heritage. He always remembered family birthdays and special occasions and celebrated them by personally preparing very meaningful and beautiful cards which he most often sent by priority mail to arrive well before the event. He spoke often of his appreciation for the ethnic and cultural diversity of San Francisco and his delight in living near the mighty Pacific Ocean. The natural beauty, gentle climate and warm breezes in that area captivated and enchanted Walton.
Walton is survived by his brother Wallace A. Mangum, two aunts, Charlotte Nicholson (maternal) and Louise Mangum Harrell (paternal), several cousins from the King, Edmondson, Nicholson and Harrell Families as well as Nephew John A. Mangum (Son of Wallace & Lynn Mangum), Niece Belynda Godwin Kirby and Nephew Christopher Godwin (Adult children of Larry & Dianne Mangum Godwin).
A private inurnment and Memorial Service will be held at Wheaton Cemetery in Wheaton, Illinois.
