Walter S. Zurek, age 66, a resident of Winfield, passed away May 24, 2022. He was born August 7, 1955 in Chicago to Walter J. & Irene Zurek.

Wally grew up in Chicago's Brighton Park neighborhood surrounded by many friends, cousins, and siblings. He went to Five Holy Martyrs through 8th grade and then went on to St. Lawrence for high school. Not long after graduation, he married Shelley and spent the next 43 years celebrating their love for one another. They have two sons, Michael and Nick, of whom are now married and with two girls of their own. Wally was known by his grandchildren as Dziadzi, which is Polish for Grandpa – a name he used to call his own Grandpa when he was a kid. Family was very important to Wally and he was happiest when his sons and grandchildren were around him.

Throughout his career, Wally took great pride in his work and built many meaningful relationships along the way. After he retired, he spent several years on the Board of his condo association, enjoying the work and getting to know all of his neighbors.

Wally was a very sweet and generous man, always taking interest in getting to know others and their lives. He was an avid Chicago sports fan and had a passion for listening to music.

He is survived by his wife Shelley; his sons Michael (Kelli) & Nick (Samantha); his granddaughters Amelia, Isla, Marleigh, & Mae; and his siblings Lorrie Zurek, Rev. Lawrence Zurek, Joseph (Michael Ruff) Zurek & Allen (Marc Wigler) Zurek.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Irene Zurek and his father, Walter Zurek.

A celebration of life will be held June 1, 2022 from 4-8 pm at Hultgren Funeral Home, 304 N. Main St., Wheaton, IL 60187. A funeral mass will be held June 2, 2022 at 10 am at St. Michael Catholic Church, 310 S Wheaton Ave, Wheaton, IL 60187. Please meet directly at church.
