Walter G. Wheaton, age 89, a resident of Berryville, AR, died Wednesday, January 6, 2016, at Cox Medical Center in Branson, MO. He was born November 5, 1926 in Chicago, IL.
Walter was most proud of his service in the US Navy as a member of the 54th Naval Construction Battalion, "Seabees", while serving in the Pacific Theatre. After World War II, he worked for the James L. Lyons Co. and Airtite, Inc. for 40 years as a carpenter and superintendent.
He was a member of the American Legion, and affiliated with the VFW. He was a member of Local 839 Carpenter's Union. Other affiliations included: the Itasca Little League Baseball and Girl's Softball leagues; the Boy Scouts of America, the Schiller Park Historical Society, the Berryville (Arkansas) Historical Society, the Berryville Youth Summer Camp, and the Civil War NSSA.
He is survived by his son, Walter W. (Melissa) Wheaton of Wheaton, IL; three grandsons, Anthony J. (Tamsin) Zell Jr., Andrew W. (Shelley) Zell and Bradford W. (Katie) Wheaton; his great-grandson, Liam A. Zell; and his son-in-law, Anthony J. (Judy) Zell
He was preceded in death by his wife, Geraldine C. Wheaton; his daughter, Cathlene A. Zell; and his grandson, Ryan W. Wheaton.
A visitation will be held on Tuesday, January 12, 2016 from 10:00 a.m. until the start of a funeral service to be held at 11:30 a.m. at Hultgren Funeral Home, 304 N. Main St., in Wheaton, IL. Interment will follow at Mt. Emblem Cemetery in Elmhurst, IL.
