Walter W. Filkin III, age 72, a resident of Wheaton, since 1955, died September 26, 2012, peacefully at home. He was born March 26, 1940 in Louisville, KY to Rev. W. Warren and Marian Filkin.
Wally graduated from Wheaton Community High School in 1958 and Wheaton College in 1962. He received his MBA from the University of Chicago. On September 2, 1961 he married Kaye Sonneveldt. He began his career at John Nuveen & Company where he specialized in Public Finance. In 1980 he helped form VanKampen, Filkin and Merritt. He eventually retired from The Chicago Corporation in 1995.
Wally faithfully served on a number of boards including those of the BR Ryall YMCA, Swedish Covenant Hospital, the Holmstad Retirement Community in Batavia, Hope Publishing, the Deike Eye Center, the Board of Benevolence of the Evangelical Covenant Church, Wheaton College Alumni Board as President, the Glen Ellyn Evangelical Covenant Church where he was a longtime member, and the Wheaton History Center. Wally served on the Central DuPage Hospital Board for 29 years and was its Chairman for many years.
Wally was actively involved in research and funding JDRF and the Chicago Diabetes Project. An insulin dependent diabetic for over 55 years, Wally was invited to participate in the Joslyn Clinic Research (Medalist Study). As a type 1 diabetes survivor and knowledgeable resource, he regularly mentored newly diagnosed children and adult diabetics.
A lifelong sports enthusiast he played basketball at Wheaton High School and at Wheaton College. Wally continued to play basketball until he was in his 50's. He enjoyed tennis and golf and was a member of Chicago Golf Club in Wheaton, and of Key Colony Beach Golf Club and Sombrero Country Club in Marathon, Florida. He was also a member of the Union League Club of Chicago.
He is survived by his wife, Kaye Filkin, two sons, David (Susan) Filkin of Lake Forest and the Rev. Eric (Carissa) Filkin of Rockford; 8 grandchildren, Tommy, Cailee, Keegan, Maggie, Cal, Teddy, Mimi, and Lina. He is also survived by his brother David (Nancy) Filkin; sisters, June Filkin Taylor, Phyllis (Scott) Lorenz, and Kathryn (Chuck) Cardwell, and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial visitation will be held on Saturday, October 6, from 3 to 8 p.m. at Hultgren Funeral Home, 304 N. Main St. in Wheaton. A service in memory of Wally's life will be held on Sunday, October 7, at 3:00 p.m. at Glen Ellyn Evangelical Covenant Church, 277 Hawthorne Blvd., Glen Ellyn, IL 60137-4037.
