Obituary

Virginia H. Roberts, age 97 (Oct. 9, 2014) died in the Johnson Center at Windsor Park Manor in Carol Stream at 9:00pm, Monday, November 10, 2014. She was born Rose Virginia Horton, youngest of three daughters to the reverend Jim Horton and his wife Marguerite Varney Horton, in St. Louis, Missouri. While still a little girl in the 1920's, the family moved to the small town of Hammond, IN, where her father became the much loved minister of the First Baptist Church from 1927 to 1941.

At age seven, she met David L. Roberts who later became her High School Sweetheart. Virginia, or Ginny as she preferred to be called, and David became engaged while both attended Wheaton College. She graduated with a Bachelors Degree in Christian Education in 1939.

At Wheaton College, Ginny and Dave became engaged. In 1942 Dave enlisted in the Army Air Force serving in the South Pacific as First Sergeant of both the 69th and 58th fighter Squadrons, WWII. Virginia and David were married April 14, 1942 by her father Rev. J. M. Horton in a small family ceremony. She wore a white wedding gown and veil and David was in his uniform.

She moved back to Wheaton, IL with her husband who worked at Wheaton College, their Alma Mater. Her husband David started in the Public Relations Department, was promoted to Director of Development and finally as assistant to then current President, Hudson Armerding.

She was a devoted, supportive and loving wife and they were married for 60 beautiful years, having two daughters Peggy and Debbie. Debbie gave them a precious grandson, Jonathan, who became the absolute joy of their lives.

Virginia lived to see her grandson grow up and marry his beautiful wife Fawn, and was blessed to be able to hold her Great Grandchild Camden David, 2 years old, and Peyton Lee, six months old, born this Spring, 2014.

Virginia was also blessed these past seven years to have wonderful, devoted loving caregivers who became her extended family. Thanks to Klarita, Kaliopi, Lana, Diana, Shamim, Alba and Frosiana for caring for her through her long illness. They became her daughters, granddaughters and great granddaughters providing comfort, support, joy, laughter and at times, tears.

Virginia was always a devout Christian, a loving, strong, giving woman who always gave of herself without question. The world is a little sadder for losing her.
