Obituary

Violet Halleman, age 88, a resident of Wheaton, IL, died Tuesday, December 21, 2010 at Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield, IL. She was born in Chicago, IL on October 17, 1922, the daughter of William and Mathilda Martin, German immigrants.

Violet graduated from Lindblom High School on Chicago's southwest side. After working in the banking industry for several years, her sister encouraged her to enroll in the University of Illinois at Champaign. She worked on the Daily Illini as a reporter and on newspaper makeup. In her junior year she was selected to become a member of Theta Sigma Phi, an academic honor society in journalism. After graduation she was employed by the National Retail Furniture Association to work on their publications. In 1954 she married Robert Halleman, a native of Wheaton.

As a resident of Wheaton she served on the executive board of the Wheaton Women's Republican Club and the Woman's Department Club of Wheaton. She was a member of the JOY group of St. John Lutheran Church and was an avid traveler in her retirement years.

She is survived by her husband of 56 years, Robert; two nieces and a nephew.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Esther Chrisman.

A visitation will be held on Wednesday, December 22, 2010 from 4-8 p.m. at Hultgren Funeral Home, 304 N. Main St., in Wheaton, IL. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, December 23, at 10:00 a.m. at St. John Lutheran Church, 125 E. Seminary Ave., Wheaton, IL 60187. Interment will follow at Wheaton Cemetery, in Wheaton, IL.
