Violet Altman, age 87, a resident of West Chicago, formerly of Batavia, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, October 29, at Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield. She was born May 11, 1919 in Chicago.
Violet enjoyed gardening and was a great cook. She was also an artist and one of her great loves was children. She worked as a cook at the Learning Tree Nursery School in Batavia. She often cooked for as many as 70 children and teachers. A devout Roman Catholic, Violet attended Corpus Christi Roman Catholic Church in Carol Stream. She was a Eucharistic minister while attending Holy Cross Roman Catholic Church in Batavia.She was an avid reader and enjoyed word searches. Later she loved listening to audio books. Violet travelled via coach to many destinations while making new friends along the way.
She is survived by her two children, Patricia of West Chicago, and Gregory (Kelly) of Atlanta, GA; six grandchildren, Susan (Mark) Bell of Carol Stream, Jeffrey of Crane Hill, AL, Scott of Berkley, Salli (Ward) Brady of Bloomingdale, Christopher (Angela) of Atlanta, GA, and Michael (Karen) of Roswell, GA; four great-grandchildren, Amber, Mark, Rachel, and Malahni Violet; and her brother, Peter (Frances) Gendville of Berwyn.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 38 years, Henry; her son, Bobbie; and her sister, Helen White.
A visitation will be held on Wednesday, November 1, from 4-8 P.M. at Hultgren Funeral Home, 304 N. Main St., in Wheaton. A funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, November 2, at 10:00 A.M. at Corpus Christi Roman Catholic Church, 1415 W. Lies Road, in Carol Stream. Prayers will be said at Hultgren Funeral Home before the Mass at 9:15 A.M. Interment will follow at Resurrection Cemetery in Batavia.
