Thomas H.
Justie
April 18, 1922 – July 20, 2020
Thomas H. Justie, age 98, passed away peacefully July 20, 2020, at Atria Park of Glen Ellyn. He was born April 18, 1922, to Thomas J. Justie and Marion F. (Archer) Justie in Chicago.
Tom grew up in Lombard before moving with his family to Villa Park, prior to attending York High School. Following high school graduation he attended Elmhurst College, but paused his college education to enlist in the Navy in August 1942. He completed basic training at Great Lakes Naval Base, then attended the Naval Service Training School in Dearborn, MI, to be trained as an aviation mechanic. Upon graduation, he served at Norfolk Air Station in Norfolk, VA, where he worked on seaplanes. He was honorably discharged March 1946.
Following his Navy service, Tom returned to Elmhurst College, graduating in 1949 with a degree in Business Administration. While at Elmhurst, he was a member of the Spanish Club, and his interest in photography filled many hours as a member of the Camera Club.
In 1950 Tom had the good fortune to meet Betty Brown on a blind date and would go on to marry her on February 3, 1951. They built a home in Wheaton in 1952, where they raised their family and lived for the next 66 years before moving in 2018 to Atria Park assisted living in Glen Ellyn.
Tom worked for more than 25 years at Allied Van Lines in Broadview, IL, in various roles before retiring in 1984. While at Allied, he enjoyed playing in the company golf and bowling leagues, and continued bowling in a senior league into his late 80s. In his later years, he also enjoyed building model airplanes and ships. He was an avid reader and a familiar face at the Wheaton Public Library for more than 50 years.
Tom is survived by Betty, his wife of 69 years; children Kevin (Julie) of Arlington Heights and Keith (Jeannie) of Geneva; and grandchildren Brian, Rachel, Ben and Lillian.
Tom was preceded in death by his sister Colette and infant brother Richard.
Services will be private. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made directly to the Wheaton Public Library, 225 N Cross St, Wheaton, IL 60187, in Tom's memory.
