Obituary

Thomas F. Fox passed away at home in the early hours of Monday, October 28, 2019, surrounded by his loving family including his wife of 63 years, Marilyn (nee Herm) Fox, and sons Thomas E. Fox, James T. Fox, and Robert J. Fox. Tom was born in Oak Park in 1934 and grew up there. As a young man, he attended Washburn Trade School and became a journeyman plumber in the local union. Later, he and his brother, Richard, operated Fox Brothers Piping Contractors for ten years. Tom and Marilyn built their first home in Warrenville in 1956 and started their family there. Later, in 1967, they built a larger home on Oak Lane to accommodate their growing family.

Tom was one of the first ten early volunteer policemen for the City of Warrenville following incorporation of the community in 1967, then he served as one of its earliest employees in the fledgling Public Works Department. There he brought a lifetime of professional skills and an innovative spirit to serve public needs within the Street Department and the Sewer & Water Department, at a time when the new municipal government lacked financial resources and its employees struggled to make ends meet…fixing water main breaks, getting the snowed plowed, and patching potholes in the streets. They made do with hand-me-down equipment and trucks, patched together for continued service. Eventually, he took on building inspection responsibilities and was named Public Works Director.

Except for a two-year period when he left the city for a time to build some fine homes in Bloomingdale, Tom remained a highly valued employee until his retirement in 1997. During almost thirty years of service to the community, he also served as Director of the Emergency Services & Disaster Agency for Warrenville, and remained active as a volunteer thereafter. He was a dedicated member of the Warrenville Bible Chapel for many years and also served on the Board of the Warren Tavern Preservationists.

He is survived by his wife Marilyn Fox; his sons Thomas E. Fox, James T. Fox, and Robert J. Fox.

He was preceded in death by his parents Frank and Ethel Fox; and his siblings Joan (Charles) Laurx, Richard (Beverly) Fox.
