Theresa M. Smith, nee Viola, age 101, a resident of Carol Stream, passed away on Wednesday, August 30, 2017, at Alden Valley Ridge. She was born August 7, 1916 in Chicago to Vincent and Pauline Viola.

Theresa was raised in the Italian neighborhood of Chicago at Taylor St. and Bishop and was a graduate of St. Patrick High School in Chicago. She was an accomplished typist and worked at Ryerson Steel and then at Brach Candy Company. She raised two sons as a single working mom.

As a young woman she enjoyed dancing. She also enjoyed travel throughout the United States. She especially enjoyed spending time with her family.

She is survived by her sons, Charles V. (Edith) Murphy of Lombard and Francis (the late Margo) (Danuta) Murphy, formerly of Wheaton, now of Cave Creek, AZ, four grandchildren, Dawn Williams, Tracy (Joe) Paukstys, Charles W. (Christine) Murphy and Nicolle Frisone, four great-grandchildren, Domenica, Francesca, Charlie and Madilyn and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry J. Smith, her siblings, Emily, Charles, Mary, Ann, Joseph and Francis and her parents.

A visitation will be held on Saturday, September 2, 2017 from 8 to 9:30 a.m. at Hultgren Funeral Home, 304 N. Main St., Wheaton. A mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. at St. Michael Church in Wheaton followed by interment at Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Hillside, Illinois.
