Obituary

Thelma Scott, age 94, died June 14, 2021, at her home in Winfield, Illinois. She was born on April 21, 1927 in Newcastle upon Tyne, England.

During WWII, Newcastle endured repeated bombings and many of the city's children, including Thelma, were evacuated to the countryside for safety while their parents remained in the city to work. While obviously a difficult time for all, Thelma adapted to the situation and often spoke fondly of her evacuation family. She later safely returned to Newcastle and her parents. Following the war, Thelma married Donaldson Scott and they moved to Marsden, a place they both loved, near the sea.

Don and Thelma were the love of each other's life.

Later, the family immigrated to the United States to pursue new opportunities. While terrified of flying, Thelma braved a fourteen hour flight on a small aircraft, making her way with her young son in tow, from Newcastle through New York and on to Chicago to join Don and make a new home. Following Don's passing, Thelma moved to Wheaton, where she and Audrey, her sister-in-law, enjoyed many shopping jaunts and pastry stops.

Thelma was a loving, supportive and kind wife, mother, grandmother and friend, always a voice of reason and comfort. She enjoyed dancing, lively political discussion and writing, among other things. Smart and possessed with a great sense of humor, she was always a delight to her family and friends. Later in life, Thelma became an American citizen. Thelma was an indomitable spirit and a fighter to the very end. She was, and is, deeply loved and will be missed by everyone who was lucky enough to have known her.

She is survived by her daughter, Sherryl Scott; her daughter-in law, Sara Moser; her grandson, Collin Scott and her granddaughter, Ann Scott.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her loving husband Donaldson Scott; her beloved son Gordon Scott and her sister-in-law and dear friend Audrey Scott.
