Thelma S. Mcpherson's Obituary

Thelma Stafford McPherson, age 85, a resident of Wheaton, Illinois died Friday, July 3 at home. She was born December 30, 1923 on a farm at Gravity, Iowa to Harry and Bertha Stafford.

She leaves her husband Alexander McPherson, two sons, Harry (Barbara) McPherson of Wheaton, IL and Brian (Kathy) McPherson of Burlington Jct., MO, two grandchildren Timothy (Andrea) McPherson of Glenwood, IA, and Angela (Michael) Lightner of Burlington Jct., MO, and three great-grandsons, Aaron and
Brayden McPherson, and Andrew Lightner. She has one sister Lorene (Merritt)Triggs of Mt. Ayr, IA, one half-brother Verne (Jennie) King of Clarinda, IA and one sister-in-law Jane Gray (Tyson) Carpenter of St. Joseph, MO. She has many nieces, nephews, and an extended family, the Parks, the Has, and the Kims of whom she was very fond.

Thelma and Alex met on a blind date while she was teaching in Tarkio, MO. They were married a year later, and have been married 58 years. After having taught home economics in Iowa and Missouri, and moving from Kansas City to the Wheaton area, she enjoyed substituting in District 200. She led a life full of service to others as exemplified by being a cofounder of Literacy Volunteers of DuPage and the first president of Literacy Volunteers of Illinois and was honored by First Lady Barbara Bush for her Literacy service on a national level. She was an active member of Community Fellowship Church and leaves many friends there.

A favorite saying is a quote from Henry Drummond who wrote. "You will find as you look back upon your life, that the moments, when you have truly lived, are the moments when you have done things in the spirit of love."

A visitation will be held on Monday, July 6, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Hultgren Funeral Home, 304 N. Main St. in Wheaton. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday at 10:00 a.m. at Community Fellowship Church, 28W240 North Ave., West Chicago, IL 60185. Interment will be held at Wheaton Cemetery.
