Obituary

Dr. Stuart C. Hackett, age 86, a resident of Glen Ellyn, died Wednesday, October 17, 2012, at home surrounded by his family. He was born November 2, 1925 in Binghamton, New York to Ray Titus and Lael Bryars Hackett .

Stu grew up in Binghamton where he graduated as valedictorian from Binghamton High School. After a semester at Wheaton College he transferred to Cornell University in Ithaca, NY, where he was in Officer Candidate School. He graduated Phi Beta Kappa and then went back to Wheaton for his Master's Degree in Biblical Literature. He earned his Ph.D. from Syracuse University in Syracuse, NY. During that period he also pastored a small church in Cincinnatus, NY.

Dr. Hackett taught philosophy of religion at Western Conservative Baptist Seminary in Portland, OR, then Denver Conservative Baptist Seminary in Denver, CO, then Louisiana College in Pineville, LA, then Wheaton College, Wheaton, IL and finally Trinity International University in Deerfield, IL.

He authored several books on philosophy. As a hobby he loved to play and sing and write country songs.

His love of Jesus Christ was his passion and motivation in life. He enjoyed talking about his faith to people, often strangers.

He is survived by his wife, Joan, three children, David (Peggy) Hackett of Wheaton, Becky (David) Cottingham of Manchester, MA, and Rachel (Mark) Blanchard of Winfield, seven grandchildren, Stuart (Robyn), Arthur (Rachel), Lisa, Mia, Peter, Jordan and Jessica, and four great-grandchildren, Jude, Samuel, Molly and Mabel.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and a sister.

A visitation will be held on Monday, October 22, 2012 from 10 to 11 am, followed by a funeral service at 11:00 A.M. at Hultgren Funeral Home, 304 N. Main St., Wheaton, IL. A private interment will be held at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood, Illinois.
