Obituary

Stephen Lee Fisher, age 63, a resident of Wheaton, passed away on Wednesday, August 14, 2024. He was born July 28, 1961, in Albany, Georgia to Jerry & Millie Fisher.

He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Suzanne (née Chmiel); his children Colin (fiancée Amy Schuldt), Hannah, and Erin Fisher; his sister Sandra (Michael) Ransome; his niece Shea Ransome; and numerous aunts, uncles & cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents.

As part of an Air Force family, Steve grew up in Georgia, Texas, Illinois, Germany, and Oklahoma. He enjoyed art, comic books, and sports. Every summer, he looked forward to visiting his grandparents' farm and relatives in Illinois.

Steve made many lifelong friends during his college years. He received his bachelor's degree from Oklahoma State University and master's in mechanical engineering at Iowa State University where he met Suzy, the girl next door. Steve and Suzy married in 1991 and chose Wheaton, IL to start new jobs and enjoy time as a couple before children.

Steve worked at BP for 33 years before retiring in 2020. His work allowed him to travel the world, where he formed friendships with people from all over. He enjoyed meeting people from different cultures and appreciated the history and architecture of each place he visited.

Steve adored his three kids: Colin, Hannah, and Erin. He loved being a dad, which he showed through coaching, taking the kids to superhero movies and basketball games, and creating art together.

Steve was a lifelong learner, constantly reading and taking classes/workshops. He shared his knowledge through roles as a Junior Achievement instructor at Emerson Elementary, Wheaton Public Library genealogy volunteer, Graue Mill interpreter, and Literacy DuPage tutor. In the rest of his limited free time, he loved gardening, repairing and riding motorcycles, maintaining a little free library, and sharing his homemade salsa, pesto, and pickles. He cherished walks around the block visiting neighbors and daily chats with his sister, Sandra.

Steve was a passionate leader who used his creativity and curiosity to better his community. He was incredibly generous with his time and talents. Steve will live on through the continued love of his family, friends, and students. He touched many lives and we will miss him greatly.
