Shirley M. Zalar, age 87, a resident of Glen Ellyn, IL, died Monday, September 10, 2018, at home. She was born February 23, 1931 in Brownsville, PA.
Shirley graduated from South Union High School, Uniontown, PA in 1949, after which she earned a home economics degree from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. After graduation she married her high school sweetheart, Tony, in 1953. They settled in Greensburg, PA where she taught high school and started a family. In 1965 they relocated to the Chicago area and finally settled in Glen Ellyn, where she remained until her passing.
During her career, Shirley taught sewing classes, preschool, worked in banking and for the financial aid office at Wheaton College.
Shirley was a devout Christian and a member of College Church in Wheaton, IL. She loved attending Sunday School and also volunteered in various ministry programs. Shirley was a talented seamstress and an accomplished bridge player. She loved her letter writing and had beautiful handwriting. She was also an animal lover and was never without a dog at her side. Shirley was a huge Cubs fan and enthusiastically sang along to "Go Cubs Go" when the Cubs won.
Shirley was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend. She will be missed by those who knew and loved her.
She is survived by her husband of 64 years, her two children, Terrie (Patrick) Doherty of Crystal Lake, IL, and Tracie (Jeff) Vanderbeck of Pikeville, KY; four grandchildren, Brandon (Meghan) Doherty, Brynna (Andrew) Harwerth, AJ Vanderbeck and Leah Vanderbeck; three great-grandchildren, Sean Doherty, Owen Doherty and Colman Harwerth; her sister, Elaine King; her brother, William (MaryLou) Dennick; and many nieces and nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Herman and Bessie Dennick; and her brother-in-law, Homer King.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, September 15, 2018 from 10:00 a.m. until the start of a funeral service to be held at 11:00 a.m. at Hultgren Funeral Home, 304 N. Main St., in Wheaton, IL. Interment will follow at Wheaton Cemetery in Wheaton, IL.
