Shirley L. Ritacco's Obituary

Shirley Polivka Ritacco – beloved wife, mother, grandmother, friend - transitioned to a new life with the Lord on November 13, 2008 at the age of 81.

A joy and inspiration to all she met, Shirley is survived by her husband of 59 years, Louis (Luigi), four sons and eight grandchildren. Families are: Steven (Beverly), Kimberly and Kathleen of Stafford, VA; Richard (Donna), Samantha, and Nicholas of Woodridge, IL; Robert (Monica), Michael and Gina of Bartlett, IL; Christopher (Kathy), Meagan, and Christian of Crestview, FL. She is also survived by two half sisters, Cathy Riebel of LaGrange and RoseMary Galloway of Auborn, WA.

A tough lady who never complained, always had a smile on her face, and didn't know the meaning of the word "quit", Shirley was active her entire life. Having 4 boys required her to run the house with an iron fist. While working outside the house to make ends meet, she managed to stay involved in her sons' sports, school activities and other extracurricular events like Cub and Boy scouts. Her love of the outdoors included horseback riding, gardening, nature walks, tennis, bird watching and travel. Shirley was an ardent Bear's fan who rarely missed watching a game - everyone knew not to call during game time. She was a great cook and loved to have everyone together during holidays and special occasions. Lou and Shirley also enjoyed live theater and square danced for many years before her arthritis took its toll. Shirley was a resident of Windsor Park Manor Retirement Community for over two years. An avid reader and card player, Shirley always stayed busy and her mind was sharp until the end. We can now picture her walking in the woods with her favorite dog Candy, and enjoying all her friends who have gone before. Shirley will be missed, but the joy she bestowed on all of us will endure.

A celebration of her life will be held on Sunday, November 23 at 3:00 p.m. at Windsor Park Manor, 120 Windsor Park Dr. at North Ave., (just west of Gary Ave.) in Carol Stream.
