Shirley Ione Brand's Obituary
Born in Milwaukee, WI on September 18, 1926, Shirley Ione Brand, nee Winch, died at age 86 on Sunday, September 1, 2013 at the Johnson Health Care Center of Windsor Park in Carol Stream, IL. As a Christian and follower of Jesus all her life from age five, her God given spirit is absent from her body but present with the Lord Jesus.
Shirley completed her BA from Wheaton College (cum laude) majoring in English literature. She then completed two masters degrees, one from Lewis University in the Teaching of Reading and the other from Northern Illinois University in Special Education majoring in Learning Disabilities and Behavior Disorders. She was also awarded the Certificate of Advanced Standing (CAS) from Lewis University as a preliminary step for entering a doctoral program.
She was a teacher in public elementary schools in Ann Arbor, Saline, and Pinckney, MI. In Illinois, she taught in Warrenville, West Chicago, Wheaton, and Glen Ellyn. Toward the end of her teaching career she taught adults at College of DuPage and other reading education courses for public school teachers. Most of the Sundays in her adult life she taught primary age children in Sunday school at the Wheaton Bible Church.
Surviving family members are Raymond, her husband of 62 years, and three children: Barbara Lynn (Shaw) Belford, nee Brand, Timothy Kent, and Stephen (Beth) David. One son, David Keith. preceded her in death at age two and a half as did her parents Mayland and Ruth Winch. Six grandchildren, Ardell (Wells) Zeman, Ashley Wells, Brian and Abigail Belford, and Parker and Gabrielle Brand also survived her. One great grandchild, Hazel Mae Zeman. Two living cousins remain, Carol (Wenzel) Krieger. and Joan (DeWitt) Adams.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 28, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. at Windsor Park, 124 Windsor Park Dr, in Carol Stream, IL. Her physical body was buried in the Wheaton Cemetery next to her son David in the northeastern section of the cemetery where a graveside service was held shortly after her death for family members.
Memorial gifts may be given to the Shakespeare Collection of Wheaton College, Wheaton, IL or to the Windsor Park Benevolent Fund, Carol Stream, IL.
