Obituary

Sheldon R. Olsen, Jr., age 86, a resident of Wheaton, IL, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, February 24, 2022, at home surrounded by his family.  He was born November 7, 1935 in Chicago to Sheldon and Doris Olsen.

He grew up in the Austin area of Chicago, attending Francis Scott Key Elementary School and attended Austin High School, graduated from Wheaton Community High School.  He attended Elmhurst College until he enlisted in the U.S. Army from 1956 to 1959 in the Army Security Agency in Japan & Korea on the DMZ.  After his service he was employed by the First National Bank of Chicago for 36 years.  He worked as a Trust Administrator in Chicago and Wheaton.

He was a devoted husband to Joyce.  They danced and bowled and golfed their way through life together.  They were blessed to have wonderful friends that shared decades of good memories.  He was an active father who was engaging with his children in their sports and activities.  Because he enjoyed being with his children so much, Joyce said she had four children. He gave his children a magical childhood. He built ice rinks in the backyard, was the chief of their Indian Princes tribe, coached Little League, played Santa, and played Shark in the pool on vacation.

His grandchildren and great-grandchildren adored him as he continued to creatively play with them and amaze them with his toys and games and sense of humor.

He never met a stranger.  His sense of humor, zest for life, and kindness and generosity captured the affection of everyone he met.

He and Joyce also participated in square dancing and were members of the Circle Eight Square Dance Club for 20 years. They then participated in Round Dancing for another 20 years. They developed many lasting friendships with many wonderful couples through dancing.

Years ago he accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior and looks forward to a reunion with his loved ones and friends in Heaven.

He is survived by his three children, Karen Olsen of Wheaton, Holly (Joe Lesch) Handley of Wheaton, and Scott Olsen of Wheaton, his grandchildren, Kyle (Jen) Handley, Trenton Dowling, Jessica Dowling, and Hannah Olsen and three great-grandchildren, Averee Solis, Leah Solis, and Declynn Handley. Also survived by his brother, Darrell (Carol) Olsen.

He was preceded in death by his wife Joyce and his granddaughter, Taylor Olsen Handley.

A visitation will be held on Friday, March 4th from 4:00 until 7:00 p.m. at Hultgren Funeral Home, 304 N. Main St., Wheaton, where a funeral service will be held on Saturday 5 th at 10:30 a.m. Interment will follow at Wheaton Cemetery in Wheaton, Illinois.
