Obituary

Seth Thomas Cognac, age 89, a resident of the Meadows in Glen Ellyn, and formerly of Winfield, died Saturday, October 21, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove. He was born on November 28, 1916 in Chicago to Elias and Louise Cognac.

Seth was a gentle, caring person who was a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He had a wonderful sense of humor and kids really loved being around him. Being the eleventh of twelve children, his father, Elias, recalled running out of options for naming him. The story is told of Seth's father looking at the mantle, and seeing a Seth Thomas clock. The rest is history.

He worked for Sunbeam Corporation for over forty years as a tool and die maker. His hobbies included bowling, softball, hunting and fishing. He was an avid Cub fan and enjoyed the Bears also. He loved to fondly recall the 1928 Model-T Ford that he bought as a young man for five dollars. The car wouldn't fit in the garage, so he had to "jerry-rig" the garage to make it fit. His life can be compared to that of a hard-working gardener who planted the seeds of love with his family and friends. He cultivated, watered and harvested those relationships to the envy of everyone he met.

He is survived by his two daughters, Marie (Joseph) Dispensa of Glen Ellyn, and Judith (James) Campbell of Jackson, MI; nine grandchildren, Christine Scurto, Jill (Todd) Culbertson, Joseph III (Jennifer) Dispensa, Suzanne (Martin) Rempala, Patrick (Lori) Gibson, Ann (John) Dziuba, Steven (Laura) Gibson, Ellen (Scott Kennedy) Gibson-Kennedy, and Mary (Keith) Jacobsen; 26 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews who called him "Uncle Zike".

He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Lena Mary (nee Cousineau); and eleven brothers and sisters.

A visitation will be held on Monday, October 23, from 4-9 P.M. at Hultgren Funeral Home, 304 N. Main St., in Wheaton. A funeral Mass will be held on Tuesday, October 24, at 11:00 A.M. at St. James the Apostle Catholic Church, 480 S Park Blvd, in Glen Ellyn. Prayers will be said at the funeral home at 10:20 A.M. Interment will follow the Mass at Assumption Cemetery, in Winfield.
