After a life of dedication to others Sandy succumbed to a year long battle with pancreatic cancer. From her work as a job coach with special need teens to her dedication to the residents at assisted living she was always filled with care for others. The five sons that she and Jack share have been the joy of her life along with the seven, soon to be eight, grandchildren that she loved. She is a resident of Bartlett and formerly a lifelong resident of Wheaton.
Working as a DuPage County Fair Board member, she has found time to contribute to the community while supporting her husband's 34 year teaching and coaching career at Wheaton North High School. She has opened the doors of her home to many a needy adolescent and has found joy in the growth that she has seen in all of them. Her attendance at Wheaton Bible Church has given her a great source of strength during the battle with cancer, chemo treatments, and clinical trials.
Sandy is survived by her husband, Jack, five sons, Jack (Beth) of Wheaton, Michael of Winfield, and Jason (Lisa) of Warrenville, and Aric Cherim of Wheaton and Adam Cherim of Glendale Heights, seven grandchildren, Samantha and Abbey, Chandler, Anthony, Pierre and Robert Cherim, and Keagan Harrington. She is also survived by her mother, Dorothy Bemke of St. Charles, MO, one brother, Jim (Mary Jo) Bemke of St. Charles, MO, one sister, Linda of West Chicago, and Godmother, Dorothy Matthison of Bloomingdale.
She was preceded in death by her father, Ray Bemke.
A memorial visitation will be held at Hultgren Funeral Home, 304 N. Main St. in Wheaton, on Friday, April 13, from 3 to 9 pm. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, April 15 at 4:00 pm at Wheaton Bible Church, Main and Franklin St. in Wheaton.
In lieu of flowers donations are may be directed to the Sandy Schomig Memorial Fund, c/o 304 N. Main St., Wheaton, IL 60187, to be used by the family to be distributed to a number of cancer treatment programs as well as the Relay for Life program at Wheaton North High School.
