Obituary

Sallie Underwood Baker, age 88, died Saturday, August 23, 2008 at her home. Born June 3, 1920 in Oak Park, Sallie was a lifelong resident of Wheaton, Illinois. She is survived by her four sons, Scott (Suzi Evlove) Baker of Monterey, CA, Robert Baker of Kihei, HI, John Baker (Shaun Nelson) of Chicago, and Richard (Mary Patton) Baker of Wheaton; six grandchildren: Mara, Jonathan, Noah, Hannah, Elizabeth and Sarah; and her nephew Scott Adam. Sallie was a constant and profound support and inspiration to her children and grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Robert M. Baker, and by her sister, Nancy Caro Adam.

Sallie held degrees from the University of Wisconsin and the Toby Colburn School of Fashion Design in New York City. As a co-owner of SDS Silhouettes, she and her partners produced period fashion shows for charity utilizing her fashion expertise and her extensive private collection of historic clothing dating to the early 18th Century. She was an active member of the Costume Society of America.

Confirmed at Trinity Episcopal Church in the early 1930's, she continued there as an active member all her life. An ardent lifelong supporter of the Republican Party, she was a past President of the Wheaton Women's Republican Club. She was a generous soul to all her knew her, as evidenced by a wide range of charities including the Wyndemere Retirement Endowment, the Alzheimer's Foundation, Trinity Episcopal Church, and Planned Parenthood.

Sallie's love of history and culture was expressed in her volunteer work at the DuPage County Historical Museum, the Wheaton History Center, DAR membership, and as the Wyndemere librarian for ten years.

The family will receive friends and relatives on Tuesday, August 26 from 7 to 10 pm at the Anderson Auditorium at Wyndemere Retirement Community, 200 Wyndemere Cir., in Wheaton Illinois.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, August 27 at 11:00 A.M. at Trinity Episcopal Church, 130 N. West Street, in Wheaton. Interment will follow the service at Trinity Episcopal Church.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the Trinity Chapel Trust Fund, 130 N. West St., Wheaton, IL 60187; or the Wyndemere Endowment Fund, 200 Wyndemere Circle, Wheaton, IL 60187.
