Russell Lowell Mixter, age 100, died January 16, 2007 at Windsor Park Manor in Carol Stream, IL. He was born in Williamston, Michigan on August 7, 1906, he was the son of Floyd and Florence Barlow Mixter.
While attending grade school and high school in Williamston he played baseball, went fishing, and developed a love of literature and poetry. After obtaining a BA in Literature from Wheaton College in 1928 he went on to Michigan State where he was awarded an MA in Genetics in 1930. Russell earned his PHD in Anatomy at the University of Illinois in 1939.
On June 27, 1931 he married Emilie Catherine Claus who went home to her Lord on August 2, 1998. They had four children. His daughter Ruth preceded them. He is survived by his son, Wilbur (Janet); and his two daughters, Joan (Jerry) Sweers, and Priscilla (Gordon) Gault. He was blessed with 10 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
He taught in the science department at Wheaton College from 1928-1979 and is fondly remembered by three generations of students. He was a member of Bethany Chapel and was President of the American Scientific Affiliation (1964-68) where he edited the ASA Journal. He was instrumental in the formation of Wheaton's joint program with the West Suburban School of Nursing where he taught part time from 1946-1977. He was co-founder and teacher at the Wheaton College Science Station in Rapid City, SD, summers (1939-70) and taught at the Audubon Camp in Wisconsin (1971-80). Dr. Mixter's amazing sense of humor and humility carried him joyfully into his hundred and first year. He has directed that his body be donated to the Anatomical Gift Society for the training of future physicians and scientists.
A memorial service will be held on January 20th at 2:00 PM, at Windsor Park Manor, 120 Windsor Park Drive, Carol Stream, IL. Interment is private.
In lieu of flowers, gifts can be given to the Wheaton College Scholarship Fund.
