Roy A. Henderson, age 85, a resident of Glendale Heights for 33 years, died Wednesday, February 9 at home. He was born on March 20, 1919 in Wheeler, Wisconsin to Adolph and Emilie Henderson.
He was a decorated veteran of WWII, where he was a squad leader in the Red Arrow 32nd Infantry Division and received the Purple Heart Medal. He was a member of Disabled American Veterans, the Wheaton Posts of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Roy was a graduate of the Chicago Conservatory of Music with a degree in Voice and Music Education. His passions were music and photography. He was an accomplished musician and played numerous instruments and also sang in the Men's Suburban Veteran's Chorus and in various churches. He was member of the Chicago Camera Club as well.
In the 1950's and 1960's he worked as a metallurgist and the plant photographer for Taylor Forge Foundry in Chicago. He then went on to work as a US Government Quality Control Inspector and retired in 1988.
Roy was a loving husband and father who was dedicated to his family. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Sarah, nee Alimentato, three children, Mark R. (Stacy) Henderson of Coal City, James J. (Michelle) Henderson of Wheaton, and Lisa L. (Mark) Banach of Elk Grove Village, nine grandchildren, Danielle, Joshua, and Elizabeth, James Jr., Anthony, and Jessica, Amanda, Lillian and Olivia, one sister, Alice Johnson and one brother, Earl Henderson.
He was preceded in death by his parents and six siblings.
Visitation will be held on Friday, February 11 from 3 until 9 p.m. at Hultgren Funeral Home, 304 N. Main St. in Wheaton. A funeral service will be held on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at Holy Cross Lutheran Church, 802 E. Geneva Rd., Wheaton with Rev. David Hanson officiating.
Interment will follow at Queen of Heaven Cemetery in Hillside.
