IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Roy W.
Graham
September 23, 1931 – December 13, 2022
Roy W. Graham entered eternal life on December 13, 2022. Roy was born in Madison, Wisconsin on September 23, 1931. He grew up on the East Side with his mom, Olive (Druliner), dad, Sidney, and 2 brothers (Junior & Dean). He attended Sunnyside Elementary and graduated from Madison East High School in 1949. He attended one year of school at UW Stevens Point where he played fullback on the football team prior to returning to UW Madison to continue his education.
On July 19, 1952, Roy married his high school sweetheart Etta Gerry in Madison.
Roy served the US Army at the Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, AL. While being a missile range tester was his primary military duty, he was also very active in sports, playing football for the base team.
Upon his discharge from the Army, Etta & Roy moved back to Madison where their first son, Glen, was born. Shortly after that, Roy took a job in East Grand Rapids, MI where they lived for 3 years. Their son Gary was born there. After a successful stint in MI, Roy was transferred, and the growing family moved to the Chicago area. Their daughter Nancy was born while living in Downers Grove.
Roy & Etta built a network of lifelong friends over the next 40 years living in Downers Grove, Glen Ellyn and Wheaton.
Roy was an ever-present member of the stands at Glen, Gary & Nancy's sporting events. With kids in Glenbard South High School's first graduating class, the first 4-year graduating class, as well as an "'81er", Roy was very active in the forming and building of the Glenbard South Booster Club.
Roy learned his love for golf at an early age. He would hitchhike across town to caddy at the Maple Bluff Country Club. He liked the challenge of the game and the comradery of the players. These experiences turned into a lifelong love of the game that he shared with family, friends and business associates for decades.
Roy joined the Glen Oak Country Club in 1973. He really wanted to make it to his 50th anniversary at Glen Oak. Roy & Etta traveled to England, Scotland & Ireland with friends to enjoy their love of the game. He continued his passion for the game when Etta & Roy moved to the Wyndemere Country Club golf community, Naples, FL, in 1998. Roy was fortunate enough to have bagged two holes-in-one. The first at Glen Oak Country Club in Glen Ellyn, IL and the second at Windstar Country Club in Naples, FL. Roy was proud of the fact that all members of the family had each made a hole-in-one.
Roy worked in sales and sales management his entire professional carrier. Traveling the country making friends and gaining golf buddies. He worked for several firms before starting his own business, RWG Limited in 1982.
Roy was known for his inability to sing. He knew all the words but could not carry a tune in a basket. We often laughed that he was a very highly compensated artist - for being paid not to sing.
Roy was a great supporter of his family and friends. Quick with a joke or story for all occasions and willing to lend a hand in any way when someone was in need.
As one friend recently told us, "Your dad was an example of a life well lived."
Roy is survived by Etta his loving wife of 70 years, sons Glen (Wanda) of Franklin, TN and Gary (Susan) of Chicago, IL and daughter Nancy (Mark) Kiel of Plymouth, MN. Cherished grandfather to Bradley (Justine) Graham of Plymouth, MN, Kevin (Sarah) Graham of Glen Ellyn, IL, Patricia (Ryan) Van Baren of Oak Park, IL, and John DeVaughan of Spring Hill, TN. Devoted great grandfather to Mina and Clark Graham, Silas Annalise and Laurelin Graham, Joy & Rose Van Baren, and Jackson and Addison DeVaughan. Further survived by Evelyn Gerry and numerous nieces and nephews.
Preceded in death by his parents Olive & Sidney Graham, his in-laws Lucille & Robert Gerry, brothers Junior and Dean Graham and his great grandson Philip Van Baren.
Memorial services are pending.
