Obituary

Roy Clogston, age 72, a resident of Carol Stream, Illinois, passed peacefully from this life on July 15, 2023 in Winfield, Illinois. He was born in Chicago, Illinois on August 4, 1950 to John and Lillian Clogston.

Due to complications at birth that resulted in a seizure disorder and learning disability, Roy developed his own view of life and how to manage it. He grew up in Chicago and was an avid fan of the Chicago sports teams – always sharing ideas on how to improve their performance. He became an accomplished bowler – winning 3rd place in a 1976 bowling tournament. He also enjoyed to fish, taking annual fishing trips with his parents to Lake Plantagenet in Bemidji, Minnesota. On one such trip, he hooked an almost 8-pound walleye that earned him a picture in the Bemidji newspaper.

Roy loved his family. Having a great memory for dates, especially birthdays, he always made sure to have a birthday card for the birthday celebrant -- sometimes making a special trip to deliver it to the recipient in time.

Roy was a loyal, dedicated employee of Bon Appetit Food Service for 40 years, working in the dish room of the Wheaton College cafeteria. He retired in May 2023.

Roy possessed a childlike faith and a sincere, unadulterated love for God. He was baptized as an adult at Bartlett United Pentecostal Church.

Despite the challenges he had in this life related to his disabilities, Roy persevered, overcame numerous obstacles, and touched many, many lives. "Hi, Roy!" was the greeting he'd receive at most places he'd go in Wheaton, and he always wished "a good day" to anyone he met. Roy often made people laugh with his impressions of "The Three Stooges," Disney characters, and others of his favorites. One could get upset with Roy but never get mad at him. One of Roy's memorable quotes is: "God creates the people, but He doesn't have to work with them."
Simply put, Roy Clogston was a unique, one-of-a-kind man who created precious memories to cherish, and he will be deeply missed.

He is survived by his sister, Cheryl (Dee) Sumner of Osage Beach, MO; nieces Amy Brooks nee Sumner, Jane Sumner; nephew Jon Sumner; and great nieces Morgan Brooks and Madalyn Brooks. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Lillian Clogston.
