Obituary

Ronald "Pappy" Kimmel, 88, of Batavia, IL, formerly of West Chicago and Wheaton, passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 9, 2025. He was born on October 17, 1936, in Chicago, IL, to Benjamin Franklin Kimmel and Agnes C. (née Park).

Pappy grew up in West Chicago and attended West Chicago High School, graduating in 1955. He earned his bachelor's degree from Aurora College and later earned a master's degree from Drake University in 1968.

After graduating, Pappy taught anatomy and physiology to pre-med and nursing students at Aurora University. After several years in academia, he decided to change paths and became a journeyman plumber. He later opened his own business, RG Kimmel Plumbing, which he owned and operated until he retired.

Pappy married the love of his life, Carlyn M. Nelson on June 9, 1962 at West Chicago Bible Church in West Chicago, IL.  A devoted Christian, Pappy was a member of Chapelstreet Church in North Aurora. His faith was central to his life, and he worked to instill a deep love for God in his children, grandchildren, and all who knew him.

Pappy proudly served in the United States Navy Reserve, stationed out of Great Lakes Naval Base. He cherished his service and could often be found wearing his Navy cap with pride.

A performer at heart, he appeared in numerous community theater productions. In the early 1990s, he earned a regular role as the grumpy but lovable Mr. Mudd on the Channel 38 program Young at Heart, hosted by the Reverend Hilton Griswold.

Pappy was a 32nd Degree Mason, a Shriner, and a longtime member of the Medinah Highlanders Pipe and Drum Band. He played the drum while marching with the band in many parades throughout the years. In his free time, Pappy enjoyed a good pipe on the patio visiting with friends and family. His warmth, humor, curiosity, creativity, and generosity will be deeply missed.

Ronald is survived by his beloved wife of 63 years, Carlyn M. (née Nelson); his loving children Brian (Gina) Kimmel and Amy (Steve) Joy; and his cherished grandchildren, Dean and Maxence. He is also survived by his brother, Benjamin Franklin (Cynthia) Kimmel III as well as many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Bonni Francis Kimmel.
