Robert "Bob" A. Verhoeven, age 84, a resident of Winfield, Illinois, died Friday, February 19, 2016, at the DuPage Convalescent Center in Wheaton, Illinois. He was born May 13, 1931 in Chicago, Illinois.
Bob served in the United States Air Force from 1951-1953 out of Bryan AFB in Texas. He got injured in the line of duty and received an honorable discharge in 1953. A few years later, he worked as a police officer for the Skokie and Lincolnwood, IL Police Departments. A dog lover at heart, he worked with the K9 division. Due to his military and police training, Bob was an avid marksman and won numerous trophies and medals during shooting competitions. He later worked in the Glenbard Township High School District 87 doing building maintenance and eventually retired in 1978. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans and was involved in the Aurora DAV Chapter where he served as Commander.
Bob's hobbies included gun collecting, mechanics, military history, and spending time with friends and family. He liked watching auto racing and John Wayne movies. He was a life long Chicago Cubs fan as he grew up just blocks away from Wrigley Field. He also enjoyed playing football for his high school team and rooting for the Chicago Bears.
Bob's quick wit, sense of humor, friendly demeanor, and compassion for his friends and family will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Pat; his children, Alan (Diane) Verhoeven of Arizona, Gary Verhoeven of Arizona, Brian (Amy) Verhoeven of Illinois, and Leanne (Wayne) Robinson of Texas. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his son, Mark Verhoeven.
A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, March 15, 2016 at 10:30 a.m. at
First Presbyterian Church of Wheaton
, 715 N. Carlton Ave, Wheaton, IL 60187.
Private interment will take place at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood, Illinois.
