Robert D SWANSON, left his earthly home and entered his Heavenly Home on July 21, 2014. He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Genevieve; and daughter Joyce (Bob) Coon; sons Jack (Shelley) and James (Kimberly); along with four grandchildren Kristina (Justin) Rominski, Joel (Erin) Swanson, Nathan Swanson, and Ben Swanson; seven great-grandchildren, and one surviving sister, Joan Priola. He was preceded in death by one brother and sister.
Robert was born August 22, 1924, to Matilda and Arthur Swanson in Chicago where he grew-up on the west side and attended Portage Park Grammar School and Schurz High School. After graduation, he entered the US Navy and served on a transport ship in the Pacific for 3½ years during WWII. After returning to civilian life, he attended Business College and started out as a salesman until he felt led to Christian ministries in 1949 which included Baptista Films, Van Kampen Press, Scripture Press, and The National Association of Evangelicals. Before retirement, he also worked at a photography studio, mailing distributor, and a recording studio.
Bob met his wife, Genevieve, in 1947 at Midwest Bible Church in Chicago. They were married by Torrey Johnson in 1948 and spent 66 years together. He was a founding member of Wheaton Evangelical Free Church and served terms as Deacon, Elder, Head Usher, and Sunday School Superintendent from 1952 to 1988. For the past 15 years, he and Gen have been members of The Compass Church in Naperville.
Bob loved to laugh and had a great sense of humor. Gen, Joyce, Jack, and Jim were his life. His love for the Lord was very evident in his daily walk. He loved boats and fun on the water with his children and grandchildren. His seven great-grandchildren have added more blessing. He is now rejoicing in heaven, and we will see him again.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, August 2 from 3 to 4pm with a memorial service starting at 4:00 at Hultgren Funeral Home, 304 N. Main St., Wheaton.
