Robert L. Spreckels' Obituary
Robert L. Spreckels, age 93, a resident of Windsor Park in Carol Stream, went to be with his Lord on Sunday, July 22, 2018, at Johnson Health Care Center in Carol Stream, Illinois. He was born June 2, 1925 to Deitrich and Esther Spreckels in Austin, Mower County, Minnesota.
Bob met Audrey Hanson at St. Paul Bible Institute in St. Paul, Minnesota where they were students. They were married on July 19, 1945. They moved to Wheaton where he studied at Wheaton College and then at the University of Chicago, where he earned his Master's Degree in Anthropology. They lived most of their life in Wheaton, Illinois where they were active members of the Wheaton Evangelical Free Church, where they were longtime members of the Kupples Klass and where he served in many ways including, as Sunday School Superintendent, as an Elder and on the Church Council. Bob and Audrey are remembered for their work in the two year old nursery for many years. They loved to entertain friends and missionaries.
He started Publishers Reserve in Wheaton in the early 1960's. It grew and supported his family and employees until he sold at the time they moved to Windsor Park.
Bob was an athlete who ran track in high school and college. He competed in hurdles and enjoyed basketball and volleyball. He also enjoyed fishing and fishing trips to Canada with friends.
He is survived by three children, Judy (James) Ebers of Naperville, Peggy Winston of Laurel, Montana and David (Donna)Spreckels of Wheaton, seven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and two sisters, Carol Hultstrand and Shirley Eickstadt. He was preceded in death by his wife of 70 years, Audrey, his parents and brother, Dick Spreckels.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 18, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. at Windsor Park, 134 Windsor Park Dr., Carol Stream, IL. Interment will be held privately at Wheaton Cemetery.
