Remembering Robert Magno Roque

The world grew a little dimmer on June 13, 2024, as Robert Magno Roque, passed away suddenly in the Chicago area. Born on August 20, 1965, in Chicago and raised in Cumberland, MD, Rob's life was an inspiring testament to the power of laughter, curiosity, and unyielding kindness.

Rob's laugh brought joy to every room he entered. It was a laugh that invited others in, making everyone feel welcome and at ease. His sense of humor, sometimes corny yet always genuine, defined his personality. Whether cracking jokes, sharing stories, or simply smiling, Rob's laughter was infectious, spreading happiness wherever he went.

Rob's insatiable curiosity defined much of his life. From a young age, his desire to understand how things worked was evident—sometimes leading him into trouble, like the time he tried to dismantle his father's Lincoln Town Car. This curiosity was the driving force behind his academic and professional pursuits. Rob graduated from Bishop Walsh High School in 1983, earned a Bachelor's degree in Political Science with a minor in Legal Studies from the University of Pittsburgh in 1987, and completed a Master's in Urban and Regional Planning with a concentration in Management Information Systems in 1989. His commitment to lifelong learning continued with his certification as an Integrator in MySAP for Public Sector in 2002 and PMP Certification in 2014.

Professionally, Rob was a trailblazer in the government finance and technology space. His career at the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) spanned over 26 years, during which he made significant contributions as an executive technology consultant. He was also a dedicated member and Vice President of Technology for PMI Chicagoland, serving on their board and helping shape the future of the organization, since 2019.

But beyond his professional achievements, it was Rob's personal life that truly defined him. He was a devoted husband to Sharon Serdula Roque, whom he deeply appreciated for her unwavering support and the loving home she created for their family in Chicago, a long way from her family and friends. Together, Rob and Sharon built a life filled with adventure and laughter, traveling to numerous cities and countries. Their recent trip to Versailles for their 33rd wedding anniversary was a beautiful celebration of their enduring love.

Rob was immensely proud of his children, Ben and Sarah. He watched with pride as Ben earned his PhD in Physics and supported Sarah's passion for music and education, attending the school concerts her students performed in Colorado, which Sarah conducted. His children were a source of immense joy and pride, and his love for them knew no bounds.

Rob's family extended beyond his immediate household. His brother Steven, his wife Leanne Cusumano and their children Alexis and Vincent, live in Reston, VA. Despite the physical distance, the bond between the brothers remained strong. Rob was also preceded in death by his younger brother Richard, who passed away at a young age. His parents, Dr. Magno P. Roque and Barbara Boyd Roque left a legacy of a strong family unit. His father was a physician, and his mother was an attorney, both contributing to Rob's values and work ethic. Additionally, Rob was close to his loving aunt, Elizabeth White of Richmond, VA, his uncle, Donald Evick and his wife, Marie from Rehoboth Beach, DE, and numerous family members in the Philippines, who all mourned his loss deeply.

Rob's passion for life extended to his hobbies and interests. He loved AI, biking, airplanes, documentaries, music, and gadgets. His fondness for his dog, Murdoch, was well-known, often taking him on walks or bike rides with a hitch-on. His enthusiasm for technology was matched by his love for bourbon, with Woodford Reserve and Angel's Envy being his favorites.

In his community, Rob was a pillar of support and service. At Trinity Episcopal Church in Wheaton, he served on numerous ministries and he was a vestry member, web designer and led the Holy Spokes bicycle group. His dedication to helping others and improving his community was evidence of his generous spirit.

Rob spent his final days at the GFOA conference in Orlando, accompanied by Sharon and Sarah. Those final days were filled with laughter, great food, and light-heartedness—an epitome of how Rob lived his life. His sudden passing from an aortic dissection type 1 rupture was a shock to all who knew him, leaving an indelible void.

To honor Rob's memory, we ask you to remember the joy he brought to your life. Raise a glass of bourbon in his honor, and let his laughter, kindness, and curiosity continue to inspire you.

Rob Roque was a man who lived fully, loved deeply, and laughed heartily. His spirit will forever remain in the hearts of his family, friends, colleagues, and all who had the privilege of knowing him.
