IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Robert Charles
Ciner
July 21, 1934 – February 8, 2025
Robert C. Ciner, age 90, died February 8, 2025 in Lombard, Illinois. He was born July 21, 1934 in Chicago, Illinois to Robert J. and Elsie M. Ciner.
Bob served in the Navy as a Motion Picture Projectionist and Electrician from 1953 to 1957. As a "Tin Can Sailor" on the USS McKean, he was able to travel the world. Among the many ports of call, he was especially fond of his visit to Australia during the 1956 Olympics.
After military service, he joined Holland Hardware in Hinsdale, Illinois. Beginning in a clerk position, he became owner of the hardware and repair business in 1981. Greg, his son, took over the business in 2019 and Bob continued as a daily consultant until 2023.
Bob met JoAnn Beaver on a blind date at the Hunt Club, now FitzGerald's, in Berwyn, Illinois. They were married in May, 1959 and several months later bought a home in the relatively new village of Schaumburg. In addition to raising their family, Bob served as Director of Civil Defense and Coordinator of Schaumburg's Emergency Services and Disaster Agency.
Bob loved being a Boy Scout (earning the rank of Eagle Scout). He took pride in his Naval service and built a reputation of excellent customer service during his 65-year career at Holland Hardware. He enjoyed listening to opera and jazz music played regularly on the shop radio. Dinner with family and friends and attending his grandchildren's events were high on his list followed by an ice-cold beer at the end of the day. Bob looked forward to several trips to Door County, Wisconsin, where he had time to read and enjoy the waters and sunsets of Green Bay.
He is survived by his wife, JoAnn Ciner; sons, Greg Ciner and Dan (Tina) Ciner; grandchildren, Justin Ciner and Emily (Tomas) Dominguez; brother, Don (Eve) Ciner, niece, Elizabeth Ciner and nephew, Richard (Mary) Ciner. Preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Nancy Ciner.
A visitation will be held at Hultgren Funeral Home, 304 N. Main St., in Wheaton, on Sunday, February 23, 2025 from 1:00pm until the time of a memorial service at 3:00pm. Interment, with military honors, will be held at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery on a future date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be directed to any of the following: Wounded Warrior Project, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Honor Flight Chicago and WDCB Public Radio.
