Robert I.
Bernstein
November 9, 1939 – March 6, 2017
Robert Irving Bernstein "Bernie", age 77, husband of Opal Spence, was reunited with his Lord and lost loved ones on March 6, 2017, at Northwestern Medicine Delnor Hospital in Geneva, IL, surrounded by his family. He was born on November 9, 1939 in Elizabeth, New Jersey and was the son of the late Rita (Segal) and Jerome Bernstein.
Grandpa was easily recognizable by his wide smile and bright blue eyes. His heart beat for his family, sports, and work. Having been raised in California, his interest in sports began at an early age. That love grew exponentially throughout his life. Grandpa was a standout athlete in both football and baseball at San Pedro High School, culminating with a collegiate scholarship offer based upon his unprecedented sporting achievements. After being recruited by the Cleveland Indians, he opted to be the first person in the family to attend college when he enrolled and played baseball at California State University at Long Beach. For the following 38 years after graduation, Grandpa loved each day that he tended to his work at Coca-Cola. His adoration for Coca-Cola was infectious to him and his family and was proudly displayed throughout the home that he shared with his loving wife. Grandpa could often be found at the racetrack, on a golf course, or watching high-school and collegiate sporting events. His golf game was incredibly strong into his mid 70's, where he continued to outplay his loved-ones on a regular basis. Even though sports were his passion, Grandpa loved being with his family more than anything. And they continue to eternally love him back.
He is survived by his wife, Opal Bernstein of Taylors, South Carolina, his two daughters - Lisa Slosar of St. Charles, Illinois and Traci Bernstein of Rancho Santa Margarita, California. He will be dearly missed by his two sisters, Evalyn Barnes and Doris Maes. His two sons through marriage, Danny Moore and Chris Moore, will miss him greatly. His son-in-law, Robert Slosar, will yearn for his constant guidance through life. He will be dearly missed and loved by his grandchildren, Jason Moore, Elliot Slosar, Nicole Moore, Kyle Slosar, Bradley Moore, Joshua Bernstein, and Megan Moore; his great-grandchildren Benjamin Slosar and Jasmine Moore, as well as many nieces and nephews. He will also be deeply missed by the loving members of his golf club, Carolina Golf. He was predeceased by his sister Sheryl.
His family will receive friends for visitation on Saturday, March 11, from 9:30 to 11:00 a.m. at Hultgren Funeral Home, 304 North Main Street, Wheaton, IL. A funeral service begins the same day at 11:00 a.m. followed by his burial at Mount Vernon Estates Cemetery in Lemont, Illinois.
