Richard T. Sands, age 84, a resident of Wheaton for 37 years, died Tuesday, April 12, at home. He was born April 2, 1921 in Pembroke, MA.
Richard was a pilot on a B-29 Bomber in the United States Army-Air Corps during World War II. After the war he graduated from Oberlin College in Ohio in 1949, majoring in Political Science. He began his career as a salesman with Travelers Express Company, and continued as the Regional Director in the Midwest Office for 34 years before retiring.
He was a longtime member and elder at Blanchard Road Alliance Church. He and his late wife Astrid, left a legacy with the two and three year olds which they faithfully taught in Sunday School over the years.
He is survived by his five children, Beth (Ron) Mangin, Crystal (Ted) Ellison, Nathan, and Mimi, all of Wheaton, and Aldy of Boston; five grandchildren, Andy, Joel, Ross, and Mark Mangin, and Tara Ellison.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife for 34 years, Astrid.
A visitation will be held on Friday, April 15, from 4-9 P.M. at Hultgren Funeral Home, 304 N. Main St., in Wheaton. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, April 16, at 9:00 A.M. at Blanchard Road Alliance Church, 1766 S. Blanchard Road, in Wheaton. Interment will follow at Chapel Hill Gardens West in Oakbrook Terrace.
