Richard J. Joyner, 82, of Wheaton, Ill., passed away at home surrounded by his family on Friday, December 4, 2015. He was born to Julie (Julius) and Lizzie Joyner on March 26, 1933 in Red Level, Alabama, in a log cabin built by his father.
Dick grew up in Red Level and graduated as valedictorian from Red Level High School. He earned a full scholarship to Alabama Polytechnic Institute (now Auburn University), finishing first in his class in 1955 as the Outstanding Accounting/Finance Student. After graduation, he served in the U.S. Army at Ft. Knox and continued his service in the Army Reserves until 1964. He earned his M.B.A. from Georgia State College in 1968.
On August 23, 1958 he married Dorothy Gray and they raised their family in Atlanta and then Wheaton. Beginning his career at Chrysler, he went on to work for many years as a financial analyst at Standard Oil/Amoco. He retired in 1989.
He enjoyed travel, golf, bowling, playing bridge and following Auburn sports. He was a member of Southminster Presbyterian Church in Glen Ellyn, where he served as a deacon and treasurer.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy, four children, Kathy (David) Hughes of Newark, Ill.; Wade (Tracey) Joyner of Yorkville, Ill.; Rory (Tod) McMahan of Englewood, Colo.; and Shannan (Brent) Kiger of Plainfield, Ill.; as well as 11 grandchildren: Rebecca, Gregory, Joseph, Stirling, Julia, Josie, Darcy, Milcha, Hunter, Ariadne and Teagan, and one brother, Bobby Joyner of Alabama. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Marie Walton.
Funeral honors and committal service will be held at Abraham Lincoln National Cemetery in Elwood, Ill., on Wednesday, December 9 at 10:00 a.m. A memorial open house will follow at Dick and Dottie's family home from noon to 4:00 p.m.
