Obituary

Rex N. Lowman, age 79, a resident of Windsor Park in Carol Stream, Illinois went to be with the Lord on Friday, July 26, 2024, peacefully at home. He was born March 4,1945 in Danville, Illinois to Neil and Viola Lowman.

Rex grew up in Steger, Illinois, and his family was active in the Chicago Heights Church of the Nazarene, where he met and married his high school sweetheart, Joyce Smith, on September 7, 1968. They were married for 46 years. They moved to Chicago in the 1970's and became members of The Moody Church.  Joyce was in the choir at TMC, becoming its librarian, and she was head of the deaconesses for several years.

Rex served in the National Guard for several years.  He began his professional life in insurance sales.  Afterwards he held several management positions, and eventually became the Administrative Director for The Moody Church, beginning that job the same day that Dr. Erwin Lutzer became Senior Pastor.  Following that, he worked at Dahlstrom Displays as Chief Financial Officer, and became lifetime friends with Dick Dahlstrom, the owner.  He then began a lengthy career in consulting, specializing in IT management.

Rex and Joyce moved to Florida in 2013 where they intended to live out their retirement years.  However, Joyce's battle with cancer entered stage four shortly after they moved, and she went to be with the Lord in 2015.  They traveled extensively, going to exciting places like Machu Picchu, Peru and skiing often.

Their home was a place of warm hospitality; Joyce was a great cook and they shared their home generously.  A couples' Bible study met in their home for many years, and the friendships formed there have lasted a lifetime and greatly enriched their lives in many ways.

Rex married Mary Whelchel on December 31, 2015.  Though they had only eight and a half years together, they enjoyed wonderful companionship and lots of joyful, fun times together.  Travels took them on river cruises to Europe and Portugal, and travels to Israel, Africa and Florida. Rex was a consistent encourager and supporter of Mary's ministry, often working behind-the-scenes at conferences, etc.

Rex is survived by his wife, Mary Whelchel Lowman, his aunt, Joyce Glover of Hoopeston, Illinois, his sister-in-law, Brenda (Dan) Van Ness, nephew Michael (Katie) Van Ness, and cousins Brad Glover, Vicky Atkins, and Gayle Vecillio.
